At Immerse 2024, The Freshwater Trust is honored to have Michael Richardson, one of our Headwaters Council members, speak about his connection to the organization and dedication to water conservation.
Michael Richardson, a leader in product development, currently serves as the head of product at Samsung Ads. This role allows him to power an advertising ecosystem and marketplace for advertisers and content creators. Prior to his tenure at Samsung, he was a VP of Product at Xandr, AT&T’s advertising division, and co-founded Urban Airship, a Portland-based startup recognized for its marketing technology. Amidst a busy schedule, Richardson prioritizes family life and is a proud father of two young girls.
We sat down with Richardson to discuss his connection to The Freshwater Trust, his role as a Headwaters Council member, and his excitement about speaking at Immerse 2024.
Headwaters Council Member, Michael Richardson
How did you first get acquainted with The Freshwater Trust (TFT)?
My journey with The Freshwater Trust began when I talked with Nick Parish, a member of the TFT Headwaters Council. He introduced me to this remarkable organization, and what struck me was the unique blend of technology and practical water conservation efforts that TFT embodies. This resonated deeply with me, as I was seeking a meaningful way to make a difference.
When I was young, my mom moved us to Council Valley, Idaho, and we lived near the Weiser River. Back then, people would tell stories about how the river used to be filled with Chinook salmon. When I was growing up, the salmon had long been gone. There were still trout that I was fishing for, though they have become increasingly rare in the river.
As I learned more about TFT’s work, I discovered that they had been partnering with the Snake River Stewardship Program, local utilities, and municipalities to run some pilot riverside restoration projects in the Weiser River.
This revelation hit me hard. Not only was TFT doing something different in conservation by using technology and data, but they were also trying to restore the river from my childhood.
I quickly realized the profound impact of TFT’s work on my life and the lives of many others.
What is something shocking you’ve learned about water after working with TFT?
I don’t know about shocking, but I’ve gained a greater appreciation for how many people and entities are connected to a single river basin or watershed. Most people think it only affects you if you’re near the river, but that’s not true. TFT’s data proves that what we do miles and miles away still harms rivers because the water in a basin moves through the ground and to that river.
As you look at the water crisis and see so many impacted people who have a stake in the decisions, you start to wonder how to change society’s water habits, laws, and practices in such a big and complicated system. It feels overwhelming and looks impossible at times.
One of the reasons I support TFT is that they see that problem as an opportunity.
TFT is always focused on bringing all these different groups together to have that conversation about water in a way that benefits everyone. Finding that common ground is the only way we are all going to be able to work together.
What do you enjoy about being on the TFT Headwaters Council?
What I enjoy most about being on the Headwaters Council is the fantastic community of people who come together for this cause. Each of us has a different background, and we’re bringing that diverse knowledge set into one place to make a huge impact. When I meet with other council members, we have so many different perspectives in the group that it adds so much more to our discussions. Again, this is a testament to TFT’s ability to unite so many people for a common purpose.
What excites you most about Immerse 2024 on June 6?
I’m ecstatic to speak this year. Knowing how well previous speakers have done, it’s a lot to live up to, but I’m up to the challenge.
I have to say that Immerse is probably my favorite event because it’s just a wonderful celebration of the work TFT has done, and it talks about optimism for the future. With the news today, it can feel like there’s nothing you can do that makes a difference. But at Immerse, the TFT team reminds us of what our support has done for water conservation and the difference we’ve made. It brings people together in this joyful celebration and lets you get hands-on with interactive elements and water conservation exhibits. The speakers energize you with their stories of conservation and compassion. Finally, the silent auction creates this fun, competitive atmosphere where you know you’re raising money for a good cause.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I don’t know who taught me this, but it’s always stuck with me. In life, you can be either a drain or a faucet. Drains constantly take energy from people, whereas faucets give so much to people around them. I always try to be a faucet.
