Irrigation Modernization

What is The Freshwater Trust doing here?

On Colorado’s West Slope, The Freshwater Trust (TFT) is partnering with ditch companies and conservation districts to design programs that build drought resilience through large-scale water delivery and on-farm irrigation modernization projects. These efforts conserve water, strengthen agricultural productivity, improve watershed health, and help address the basin’s structural deficit. They also improve water security for individual producers and enable them to participate in conservation programs and contribute to water quality improvements. TFT’s partners are using the organization’s patented decision-support tools to identify strategies for drought response, explore what water savings are possible within their system, and calculate the economic benefits to farmers and ranchers and water quantity and quality benefits to the river system.

Why is this important?

The Colorado River brings water to seven U.S. states and parts of Mexico. Its path irrigates 5 million acres of agricultural land, serves 30 Native American tribes, and provides more than 40 million people with drinking water.

As water scarcity increases, agricultural communities need the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions. TFT and its partners work together to forecast water supply, improve water efficiency, and maintain vibrant agriculture.

How can you support these efforts?

One key way to support our efforts is through donations. TFT ensures that every dollar you give delivers measurable results that will make a difference.

You can also support us by subscribing to our newsletter and following or sharing our updates on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to help drive meaningful freshwater conservation.
