Restoration After Wildfire

What is The Freshwater Trust doing here?

After the devastating Almeda fire in 2020 burned through the Rogue River basin, The Freshwater Trust (TFT) worked with its partners to complete a 47-acre restoration project along Bear Creek between Ashland and Phoenix, Oregon.

Much of the damaged area included project sites where TFT had planted trees and vegetation.

The project had two key goals: community safety and rebuilding. Removing hazards, including burned debris and unstable burned trees, was a top priority. Rebuilding would take time, but after the fire, TFT and its partners recognized that they would need to build for fire resilience and landscape manageability.

Why is this important?

Before the Almeda fire, TFT had never experienced or set out to provide post-wildfire restoration work, providing a unique learning opportunity for the organization.

For example, we learned that our project sites burned cooler and much slower than other locations because we have processes in place for the continued weed control and removal of invasive species from our project sites. Such invasive species burn hotter. This realization has influenced part of the rebuilding process as we work with partners to develop fire breaks in the non-burned area, focusing on removing invasive plant species that could pose a significant danger to the community.
