Replenish Groundwater
What is The Freshwater Trust doing here?
Working in the Cosumnes watershed in Central California, The Freshwater Trust (TFT) has partnered with a major water district to capture excess surface water from winter rainfall and release that water onto dormant agricultural fields. This process allows the fields to slowly absorb the water, replenishing the aquifer (the layers of soil and sediment in the ground) that stores the groundwater needed for agriculture.
Why is this important?
California’s Central Valley grows 25% of America’s food, requiring extensive water. Farmers rely on groundwater to support their crops, but there is a limited supply. When the aquifers holding the groundwater run dry, they pull water from outside sources, namely rivers and streams.
In other words, the faster we deplete groundwater resources, the more we risk drying up our rivers and streams and, eventually, our farmlands.
Replenishing the groundwater, sometimes called groundwater recharge, is one solution to ensure aquifers stay fuller and avoid draining water from rivers and streams. More water in rivers and streams will also help fish and wildlife habitats thrive.
How can you support these efforts?
