Support Ecosystems

What is The Freshwater Trust doing here?

Within Sacramento County, The Freshwater Trust (TFT) is partnering with a major utility on a program to address the groundwater shortage. The program focuses on delivering clean, recycled wastewater to irrigate agricultural fields. Our role in this program includes measuring the environmental benefits of using recycled water to replace groundwater and protect groundwater-dependent ecosystems.

TFT is also working on programs that can help provide additional water to avoid draining water from the Cosumnes River. This river is vital for fall-run Chinook salmon migration.

Why is this important?

California has experienced droughts and mega-droughts over the past several decades, yet the state still produces 25% of the nation’s food. Unfortunately, so much agricultural production year after year keeps depleting groundwater resources to the point that wells and aquifers are running dry. Landowners face a water shortage that could put farms out of business.

By working with major utilities and other partners on innovative solutions like groundwater recharge and recycled water usage, TFT can help farmers and the economy thrive.

Likewise, these solutions benefit the environment by protecting thousands of acres of dry and wetland habitats and forests near rivers that support abundant wildlife and diverse plant species.
